In THIS IS NOT A TRIAL voeren kunstenaars, acteurs en UU-studenten een ecocideproces op tegen een fictieve Nederlandse multinational die een ecosysteem verwoest. Van dit toneelstuk is een film verschenen en deze wordt exclusief voor deelnemers aan Recht voor Klimaat en studenten en medewerkers van de Universiteit van Utrecht opnieuw getoond. Na afloop gaan we in gesprek met de makers en de zaal. Daarin staat de vraag centraal: hoe zou jij als jurylid oordelen over schuld en verantwoordelijkheid in deze zaak? Stap de rechtszaal binnen, luister naar de verhalen van mens, dier en landschap en ontdek hoe recht, kunst en klimaatstrijd elkaar kruisen, terwijl je zelf meebeslist wat gerechtigheid in tijden van ecologische crisis kan betekenen.

In THIS IS NOT A TRIAL, artists, actors, and UU students stage an ecocide trial against a Dutch multinational corporation that is destroying an ecosystem.

The setting: a fictional trial, set in a time when ecocide has been introduced into criminal law, and major crimes against nature are now being prosecuted.

The accused: the Dutch multinational Smit Refineries N.V. and its CEO, for the severe destruction of an Indonesian ecosystem where nickel and other rare earth metals are extracted. Though these raw materials are essential for the development of green technologies for a more sustainable future, the nickel mining industry destroys key biodiversity areas, pushes unique species to the point of extinction and displaces Indigenous communities from their lands.

The film recording of this theater play has been released and will be screened exclusively for participants in Recht voor Klimaat (Justice for Climate) and students and staff of Utrecht University.

Afterwards, we will engage in a discussion with the creators and the audience.

The central question will be: as a member of the jury, how would you judge guilt and responsibility in this case? Step into the courtroom, listen to the stories of people, animals, and landscapes, and discover how law, art, and the climate struggle intersect, while you yourself help decide what justice can mean in times of ecological crisis.
